As an FYI, I hiked the Germantown trails today, they still have heavy snow, compacted by a few previous hikers which makes them rough and uneven. So you have to be careful. The Green trail took me about 45 minutes and the Blue trail took 35 minutes. Will probably take longer for shorter legs.
While it was cold, dressing in layers helps. Hiking will cause us to sweat so it is important to ventilate as you hike, yet cover back up quickly so as to not catch a chill.
Start with a good base layer, something that wicks water away like the troop poly shirts. Then have an insulating layer (thermals, sweatshirt, etc) and then your outerware (jacket, hat, gloves, scarf, etc). Insulating socks are a must and having an extra pair is a good idea. Just don't put on socks so thick that you can't move your toes. You need wiggle room to keep them warm. Avoid cotton if you can, when they get wet they make you colder.
Make sure to bring a daypack with water and an energy snack, plus your 10 scout essentials. Being prepared is not just the scout motto, it could be life saving for you, your buddy or even a stranger on the trail.
YIS,
Mr Ferrara
